3 Things I Learned in Oprah’s Life Class w/ Deepak Chopra

This Lifeclass aired last night on OWN- hope you watched it! In case you didn’t here’s a repost of my experience at the original taping!

The taping of Oprah’s Life Class was yesterday, so as promised I wanted to fill you all in on how it went! I have to say that going into the event I knew very little about Deepak Chopra or what the Life Class would be focusing on because I got tickets off of the wait-list. I was still pretty pumped though! A good friend and I took our seats in the orchestra section of Radio City Music Hall and waited with bated breathe for Oprah to arrive.

And when she did arrive? AHHHHHH! I have to admit I was SO geeked!! 😀 Everyone got out of their seats and cheered- the energy was crazy! Oprah gave some opening remarks & then Deepak came out and everyone was cheering all over again! Took awhile to settle down.

The focus of this Life Class was Spirituality. Deepak and Oprah talked about spirituality, but not in the context of religion. Instead, spirituality was defined as “living your life with an open heart through love”. I have to admit, this all seemed a bit fluffy to me -I spend more time focusing on wellness from a physical perspective!- but I tried to stay as open as possible throughout the Life Class…

…and I’m glad I did, because I learned a lot about what being well “in the soul” means.

Here’s 3 things I learned from Oprah’s Life Class:

1. You are a spiritual being having a human experience.
The key takeaway here was that we often focus too much on the physical (our bodies, our possessions, etc) without thinking about what really is inside of us: our spirit. What is your spirit? Find out by asking the right questions: Who are you? What do you want? What is your purpose? What does a meaningful relationship mean to you? Know yourself so that you can put your spirit first!

2. The worst thing you can say about another person contains some truth about yourself.
Who hasn’t gossiped about someone else? Or judged someone for making a particular decision? This takeaway really stuck with me because it made me realize that every judgment you make of someone else is a reflection of something inside of you, not them. The reverse is also true- someone else’s judgments of you are really based in some truth within them, not you. So take judgment for what it’s worth.

3. “I use my memories but I will not allow my memories to use me.”
This is a quote from Deepak Chopra that I’ve come to really appreciate. It was said in the context of letting go of the past and not letting it define you. We all have thoughts/beliefs in our heads about who we are based on past experiences. Maybe you made a bad decision and regret that choice. Maybe you experienced a tragedy or were hurt by someone else. Whatever the memory is, you can choose not to let certain past experiences limit how you view yourself today. Tell yourself a new and different story!

Oprah’s Life Class left me feeling really refreshed, kind of the same way that a really great workout leaves me feeling lighter, happier & ready to take on the world! I’m so happy I was able to experience the show. Check it out when it airs on OWN on April 23rd at 8pm EST/ 7pm CT!  -CFC

Awesome! So excited that you go to go. In other news, has Perez lost a million pounds?

It was really amazing to be in the same room with Oprah! I kept trying to run up and get a picture but was too far back to be successful…On Perez, yes! He has lost a LOT of weight (I hope he’s been healthy about it!) and also is trying to change his image. He was spotlighted on the show as trying to turn over a new leaf and not be such a bully to celebs. I’m not buying it though, and apparently neither were some other people in the audience! Time will tell of course.

I love the “the worst thing you can say about a person…” quote!!! I don’t understand people who have a problem with another doing them!!! AWESOME!!!
