Did you miss me? 😉 Had a tough week last week, so I didn’t get a chance to post, but I’m back and feeling better than ever so…
Summer is here! Memorial Day Weekend marks the beginning of summer, which means more outdoor events, more parties and yes, more barbeque! I went to two Memorial Day events this weekend (a rooftop party and a beach bbq) and had a blast! At the beach bbq, a friend -who knows about my love of healthy-eating & fitness- took one look at the food table & asked me “So what can I eat here that’s healthy?” Here’s some of my healthy bbq tips:
1. Hit up the (spicy) mustard and skip the ketchup!
As it turns out, mustard is a health-conscious condiment! Whether it’s French’s mustard or a spicy brown dijon, mustard is a low-calorie spread that goes a long way to add flavor without sacrificing your healthy diet. Beware of honey mustard & stay away from ketchup though- these condiments are often full of unnecessary sugars!
2. Skip -or split- the bun!
This one is obvi! It’s likely that your hot dog/burger will come with a white bread bun, which is a big health no-no. I’m a big fan of skipping the bun entirely, but you can also just eat half the bun if you feel like you need the bread. It might get a little messy, but you’re saving yourself a lot of empty carbs.
3. Make your own green salad using burger toppings!
If you’re at a bbq with burgers then chances are there will be toppings- lettuce, tomato, onion, etc. But these ingredients aren’t just toppings, they are also the makings of a great fresh salad! Pile the lettuce, tomato and other sides onto your plate and add a little mustard for flavor (or if there’s lemon/lime around, squeeze some juice on there for instant yum)!
Happy clean BBQ-eating! 😉
