  1. Jane says:

Yes, I think they should cancel, and use those resources to help people who are still stranded without power

I dunno Jane. What about the people who have come from all over the world to run the Marathon (paid for hotels, flights, etc.)? Do their costs not matter? Also, I feel like we don’t really have a sense of just how many resources are being diverted to the marathon that could otherwise be used for post-Sandy relief. Is it really a zero-sum game?

  2. I wouldn’t mind some of those arm warmers for my 5K this Sunday 🙂 I am not sure about canceling the marathon. On one hand a lot of people have been training for it and for some it may be their first marathon, so they would be disappointed to have it canceled. On the other hand, the city might not be able to handle it and it could be a disaster…plus some people might not be able to travel to NY for it. So it is a tough decision. I hope things will improve by Sunday and that everyone will have a safe run!

I’m also ambivalent Windy! I feel like the timing of the marathon post-Sandy isn’t ideal, but I’m not sure logistically that you can just cancel it- thousands of runners come here from overseas to do it- are they just supposed to fly home and come back in a week? It’s unfortunate, but unavoidable that stuff like this happens when natural disasters strike…
