3 Ways to Achieve Your 2013 Fitness Resolutions


Happy New Year! So here we are in 2013, and if you’re anything like me, you’ve probably set some fitness/health resolutions for the new year. But how do you stick to them?

1. Pick One Goal To Focus On

I think the surest way to fall off on your fitness goals is if you take on too much at once. How likely is it that you’re going to lose 10 pounds, get a six-pack and eat more veggies all at the same time? Sometimes less is more; set one goal that you can focus your attention on and accomplish. If it’s hitting the gym more regularly- do it! Trying out a new fitness DVD- go for it! Then when you’ve made progress on that goal you can move on to the next!

2. Set Clear Milestones

Got your one goal that you’ll be focusing on first? Well now you need a way to hold yourself accountable and measure your success! If it’s lowering your cholesterol, go to your doctor in January and get a sense of what your cholesterol readings are. Then promise yourself that you’ll check back in at a particular time -say 3months- to see if your readings are better. Trying to lose 10lbs? Set a goal date for the weight loss and steps along the way to make sure you’re moving closer.

3. Believe In Yourself and Your Goal

It might sound corny, but believing in yourself is the surest way you’ll be able to stick to your fitness/health resolutions. Don’t start out saying that you won’t achieve your goal because then, believe me, you won’t! Also, you need to believe in the goal you’re setting for yourself in order to be successful. Are you being realistic in the amount of muscle you want to gain or the weight you want to lose? Are the milestones & metrics you’re using too aggressive or too timid? -CFC

  1. my goal is to complete a few more races, which implies more running, more strength training, healthy diet, etc. I made myself sign up for the Chicago Polar dash 5K in 10 days and am looking for longer race(s) for spring. Send some warm wishes my way on Jan 12th so I don’t lose any fingers/toes to frost bite 🙂
